Special Announcement Regarding Entry Changes
March 2008

Dear Coaches and Captains:

After reviewing the 2007 General Entry Rules, the Managing Directors of the Head Of The Charles Regatta identified a need to refine the entry process. In 2007, institutions submitting non-guaranteed entries in sweep-oared events had the opportunity to submit one entry in each of the lotteries identified below (for a total of eight possible entry applications). These applications were not ranked and were all subject to a random draw in early September.

1) Men’s Youth
2) Men’s Lightweight
3) Men’s Club/Collegiate/Championship
4) Men’s Master/Senior Master
5) Women’s Youth
6) Women’s Lightweight
7) Women’s Club/Collegiate/Championship
8) Women’s Master/Senior Master

After reviewing the 2007 entry data, the Managing Directors agreed to eliminate the lottery divisions and revise the sweep-oared entry process in the manner detailed below.

General Sweep-Oared Entry Rule Changes:

1) In addition to its guaranteed entries, an institution may submit up to four sweep-oared non-guaranteed entry applications in men’s event-divisions and up to four sweep-oared non-guaranteed entry applications in women’s event-divisions with the following restrictions:

A. Institutions may submit only one non-guaranteed entry per event-division.
B. Including guaranteed entries, an institution may have no more than four entries in a single event-division (i.e. if an institution has four guaranteed entries in a single event-division, they may not submit an additional non-guaranteed entry application in that same event-division).

2) Beyond each event-division’s allowed minimum or its number of received guaranteed entry applications, whichever is greater and subject to a maximum of 75 boats per event-division, the number of non-guaranteed entries accepted into an event-division shall be determined by the event-division’s proportional share of the remaining non-guaranteed entries received.

ALL NON-GUARANTEED ENTRIES WILL BE SUBJECT TO A RANDOM DRAW HELD IN EARLY SEPTEMBER.

Additional Rule Changes for Sculling Event-Divisions:
Please note that according to the General Entry Rules, the number of sculling (singles/doubles) entry applications an institution may submit will have no bearing on the number of sweep-oared (fours, eights) entry applications an institution may submit.

1) Applications to the Youth Double may be made by the institution (deadline: September 1st); athletes must be named or can be renamed by October 1st. Guaranteed entries in the Youth Double will be applied to the institution rather than to the individual athletes and an institution which has an entry accepted into a Youth Double event-division in which it properly competed the preceding year will start ahead of all new entrants and will be seeded according to its finish time in that event-division in the preceding year. Institutions may submit no more than four entries into the Men’s Youth Double event-division and the Women’s Youth Double event-division.

2) The Regatta shall accept up to 200 double-sculling entries, up from 150 in 2007.

Please read the General Entry Rules for more details. Final wording will be published in the Handbook in the spring of 2008.
