50th Gala and History Exhibit highlight celebration; Pinsent and Farooq to speak at Gala dinner

Cambridge, MA; 7/14/2014

The Head Of The Charles® Regatta (HOCR), the world’s largest two-day rowing competition, will celebrate its 50th race this October, a milestone that the Regatta will commemorate with exciting, inspiring events and offerings. Prominent among them is the HOCR 50th Gala Dinner with an anticipated 700 guests; a 50th documentary exploring the Regatta, which has captivated rowers and spectators alike since 1965; and a 50th History Exhibit, to be located upstream of the Eliot Bridge, near Hospitality Row.

One of the world’s preeminent rowing competitions, the 2014 Head Of The Charles Regatta features a variety of races for U.S. and international rowers of all ages and abilities. The 50th Regatta, scheduled this year for October 18 and 19, is expected to attract 11,000 competitors and thousands of spectators.

As has become tradition for the Regatta, the HOCR will also feature a world-class field of competitors, drawing elite athletes from around the world and the United States. Athletes from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand will compete, alongside U.S. competitors from across the country.

BNY Mellon, a global leader in investment management and investment services, returns for the second of a five-year commitment as Presenting Sponsor of HOCR.

To celebrate this historic year, HOCR organizers are inviting fans and competitors to commemorate the milestone in a variety of ways:

A 50th Gala celebration will be held on Saturday October 18, where Olympians and key Regatta organizers will address rowing teams, alumni groups, clubs, and individuals past and present. The event will be held from 6:00 – 9:30 PM at the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School Gymnasium. Individual tickets are $75 ($1,000 for a table of 10) and each guest will receive a HOCR 50th commemorative gift and other 50th souvenirs. For more information, visit: http://bit.ly/HOCR50Gala

A 50th HOCR documentary film will be unveiled leading up to the event, featuring a historic look at the Regatta, including archival footage and rowing stories from years past. Clips of the film will premiere at the HOCR 50th Gala on October 18, and will be available for purchase throughout Regatta weekend, 2014.

• Fans will also be able to visit the HOCR 50th History Exhibit near Hospitality Row during the weekend’s festivities to see historical artifacts, photos, and other HOCR memorabilia from past Regattas.

“No one could have envisioned how big this event would become when it was started back in 1965 by a few members of the Cambridge Rowing Club, but this will be a spectacular year for the Regatta, and one that reaffirms the event as New England’s most celebrated fall tradition,” said Head Of The Charles Executive Director Fredrick Schoch. “We’ve been planning for this weekend for years – October will be the culmination of a half century of historic rowing on Boston’s famed Charles River, and fans will be delighted by what the Regatta has in store.”

The gala will feature two guest speakers, champions in the sport of rowing. Yasmin (Yaz) Farooq is a U.S. Women’s National team coxswain and competed in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics in the Women’s 8+. She has won many World Championship medals, and has been the Head Women’s Rowing Coach at Stanford University since 2006.

Matthew Pinsent is among the most accomplished and celebrated Olympian rowers of all time, having won Gold for England in the 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 Games. He earned gold medals in ten World Championships between 1991 and 2002, and finished first in the 2012 Head of the Charles Men’s Masters 8+. He is currently a BBC Sports commentator.

In addition to Presenting Sponsor BNY Mellon, HOCR returns an impressive lineup of corporate partners, including Brooks Brothers (Official Premium Apparel Sponsor), New Balance (Official Athletic Footwear and Apparel Sponsor), and EMC² Corp. (Official Data Storage). Sperry Top-Sider, the Lenox Hotel, Sierra Nevada, Gentle Giant Moving Co., and the Shell Fuel Rewards Network return as well to sponsor this year’s event.

The historic 2014 Regatta is set to feature its strongest and most diverse rowing field in event history. Local, international, and Olympic rowing legends are expected to compete, as well as teams from nations that have never before participated in HOCR – exciting additions to an already-deep field of international entrants.

“This is truly a global competition, and we couldn’t be prouder to see more countries represented in this race, especially for the 50th races,” said Schoch.

The Head Of The Charles Regatta is free and open to the public. In addition to exhilarating rowing action on the challenging three-mile course – beginning at Boston University’s DeWolfe Boathouse and finishing at Artesani Park in Brighton – the Regatta offers a number of family-friendly activities for all ages, including a rowing and fitness expo; food vendors serving delicacies from all over the world; and Reunion Village – the half-way point between the race offering clubs, schools, alumni groups, parents, boosters and more the opportunity to catch up with friends in a fun and relaxed environment.
